Frumusețea pământului udat de Dunăre ni se dezvăluie în drumul nostru, în cea de-a patra zi a vacanței de vară, dinspre Ialomița spre Constanța. Intrăm în județul Constanța prin localitatea Hârșova, unde poposim peste noapte înainte de a explora împrejurimile și a ne continua călătoria.
The beauty of the land nourished by the Danube unfolds before us on the fourth day of our summer holiday, as we travel from Ialomița towards Constanța. We enter Constanța County through the town of Hârșova, where we spend the night before exploring the area and continuing our journey.
Scriu acest articol în noiembrie (din diverse motive...), dar amintirea verii este încă vie – căldura din Hârșova, din august 2024, a fost printre cele mai intense pe care le-am trăit! Așadar, ajunși seara în Hârșova, după o masă rapidă la cantina de peste drum1, unde ospătărița, aparent lipsită de entuziasm, ne-a servit pe terasa încinsă, ne-am retras la pensiune2 pentru o noapte de odihnă înainte de a ajunge a doua zi la malul mării.
I’m writing this article in November (for various reasons...), but the memory of summer is still vivid – the heat in Hârșova in August 2024 was among the most intense I’ve experienced! So, having arrived in Hârșova in the evening, we had a quick meal at the diner across the road1, where the waitress, though somewhat reluctant, served us on the hot terrace. We then retreated to the guesthouse2 for a good night’s rest before reaching the seaside the next day.

Ziua 5 – Hârșova și drumul spre Năvodari

După ce am luat micul dejun la Profi-ul3 de pe șoseaua principală, am făcut o scurtă incursiune prin acest orășel străvechi de pe malul Dunării. Am început cu o plimbare spre port. Portul este lipsit de grandoare, iar în fața sa se află un mic parc care pare rămas în anii ’70. Totuși, am găsit aici câteva locuri pitorești pentru fotografii, înainte de a ne îndrepta spre frumusețile naturale din zonă.
Day 5 – Hârșova and the road to Năvodari
After having breakfast at the Profi3 on the main road, we took a brief stroll through this ancient little town on the Danube’s bank. We started by heading down toward the port. The port is somewhat unimpressive, with a small park in front that seems frozen in the 1970s. Still, we found a few scenic spots for photos here before heading off to explore the natural beauties of the area.

De aici se pot vedea, în stânga și în dreapta, Canaralele Dunării. Aceste stânci sunt cunoscute sub diferite denumiri, unele mai vechi și mai puțin politicos formulate decât altele, însă localnicii încă le folosesc frecvent, îndrumându-ne fie spre "Canaraua Turcească", fie spre "Canaraua Țigănească".

From here, one can see the “Canarale” cliffs of the Danube to both the left and the right. These cliffs are known by various names, some of them outdated and less politically correct, though still commonly used by locals, who directed us either to the “Turkish Canara” or the “Gypsy Canara.”

Noi am ales să urcăm pe Dealul Cetății, cunoscut și sub numele de Canaraua Turcească, unde am găsit Cetatea Carsium (care dă și numele orașului), aflată în lucrări de reabilitare.
Cetatea Carsium din Hârșova, fondată de romani în secolul I d.Hr., a fost un important avanpost defensiv și un punct strategic pe Dunăre. În perioada bizantină (secolele IV-VI), a fost întărită pentru a rezista invaziilor barbare, iar în secolul VII a suferit distrugeri majore în urma invaziilor avaro-slave. În secolele X-XIII, a fost sub controlul Imperiului Bulgar și a fost martoră conflictelor bizantino-bulgare. La sfârșitul secolului XIV, a intrat în sistemul defensiv al Țării Românești, dar a pierdut importanța odată cu expansiunea otomană. Cetatea s-a năruit în secolele XV-XVI, iar astăzi rămân doar ruine ce reflectă istoria tumultoasă a regiunii.
We decided to climb up the “Fortress Hill,” also known as the “Turkish Canara,” where we found the ruins of Carsium Fortress (which gives the town its name) under renovation.
The Carsium Fortress in Hârșova, founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD, was an important defensive outpost and a strategic point on the Danube. During the Byzantine period (4th-6th centuries), it was reinforced to resist barbarian invasions, and in the 7th century, it suffered major damage from Avar-Slav invasions. In the 10th-13th centuries, it came under the control of the Bulgarian Empire and witnessed Byzantine-Bulgarian conflicts. At the end of the 14th century, it became part of Wallachia's defensive system, but lost its significance with the Ottoman expansion. The fortress fell into ruin in the 15th-16th centuries, and today, only the remains stand, reflecting the region's turbulent history.

Muzeul din apropiere se afla, de asemenea, în renovare, dar cu acordul muncitorilor am reușit să urcăm măcar pe deal, de unde am admirat curbele și insulițele Dunării, ce formează Balta Ialomiței.
The museum nearby was also under restoration, but with the workers’ permission, we at least managed to climb the hill, where we admired the beautiful bends and small islands of the Danube, which form the Ialomița Marsh.

Dealul Belciug (sau Canaraua Țigănească) nu l-am mai urcat din cauza căldurii apăsătoare și a drumului lung ce ne aștepta. Totuși, am ajuns până aproape de el, unde am admirat de la distanță frumoasa Biserică a Sfinților Împărați Constantin și Elena.
We didn’t climb Belciug Hill (or the “Gypsy Canara”), due to the oppressive heat and the remaining distance we still had to cover. However, we went close enough to admire from afar the beautiful Saints Constantine and Helen Church.
Apoi, obosiți și încercați de căldură, ne-am continuat drumul cu un ultim obiectiv înainte de destinația finală din Năvodari: Dealul Alah-Bair. Din păcate, și acest obiectiv l-am vizitat doar parțial din cauza căldurii (se pare că sfârșitul lui august nu este ideal pentru o călătorie prin inima Dobrogei). Totuși, după ce am lăsat mașina pe marginea șoselei, ne-am apropiat de deal pe jos, aproximativ un kilometru. Am făcut câteva fotografii pentru a surprinde splendoarea dealului, înconjurat de câmpuri și arbuști sălbatici.
Then, tired and overheated, we hit the road again, with one last objective before our final destination in Năvodari: Alah-Bair Hill. Unfortunately, we only partially visited it because of the heat (apparently, the end of August isn’t ideal for a trip through the heart of Dobrogea). Nevertheless, after leaving the car on the roadside, we walked about a kilometer toward the hill. We took some photos capturing its full splendor, surrounded by fields and wild shrubs.

It’s a spot definitely worth a return visit! On this fifth day, we also reached Năvodari, which would become our base for the next nine days. I’ll share more about Năvodari in the dedicated article.
